The Toyota GR Supra just got more accessible.

Since its launch, the 2020 Toyota GR Supra has only been available with a BMW-sourced 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline-six producing 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque.

Now, one year after the reborn sports car made its world debut at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show, Toyota is expanding the 2020 GR Supra range with a new entry-level 2.0-liter turbo model, making the Japanese sports car accessible to a wider audience.

Specifically, the new 2.0-liter engine is an inline four-cylinder unit fitted with a single twin-scroll turbocharger producing a total of 258 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Power is sent through an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, enabling the new entry-level Supra to accelerate to 62 mph from a standstill in just 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph, compared to 4.1 seconds in the 3.0-liter model. The same 2.0-liter powerplant is also offered in the BMW Z4 sDrive30i Roadster.

The engine’s smaller size and lighter weight have also improved the driving dynamics. Compared to the 3.0-liter model, the 2.0-liter Supra is 220 pounds lighter, while positioning the engine closer to the center of the car has resulted in a 50:50 front-rear weight balance and more responsive handling.

“To achieve agile steering and stable cornering, we worked very hard to reduce the new car’s weight, while aiming for a 50:50 weight balance,” said GR Supra Chief Engineer Tetsuya Tada. “This presented us with huge challenges, but we did not want to compromise on our targets.”

Standard features for the new entry-level include 18-inch alloy wheels, a four-speaker audio system with 8.8-inch display and sports seats with black Alcantara upholstery.

In terms of safety tech, the 2.0-liter Supra is equipped with a pre-crash safety with braking function, pedestrian and cyclist detection with braking function, lane keep assist with active steering, road sign assist and an intelligent speed assist.

Available packages include a Connect pack that adds a navigation system and connectivity to online services, while the Sport pack adds an active differential, adaptive variable suspension and sports-quality brakes.

The Premium pack, on the other hand, adds comfort and convenience features including a 12-speaker JBL premium sound system, head-up display, wireless smartphone charger, black leather upholstery and power seat adjustment with memory setting. It also includes elements of the Connect pack, plus additional storage and lighting features.

At launch, a limited-edition Fuji Speedway version will be available featuring a unique white metallic paint finish, contrasting 19-inch matt black alloy wheels, and red door mirror housings.

Inside, the interior features carbon fiber dashboard trim inserts and striking red and black Alcantara upholstery. Production will be limited to just 200 examples in Europe, but a similar model could still be sold in the US.

Sales for the regular 2.0-liter Toyota GR Supr will begin worldwide in March 2020. Pricing details haven’t been announced.
